The integral ADAPTIVE BRAKE system improves ride comfort and safety by helping to execute critical braking manoeuvres with the ABS anti-lock braking system and making difficult driving situations easier with convenience functions.
These include the HOLD function which acts like a parking brake and can be activated by briefly depressing the brake pedal (and is released again either by briefly depressing the accelerator pedal or by depressing the brake pedal briefly once again). The HOLD function then keeps the vehicle from rolling unintentionally when stopped at a light or in stop-and-go traffic. The hill-start assist prevents the vehicle from rolling back, or forwards unexpectedly, e.g. when pulling away on a slope and changing from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The "brake drying" function ensures that full braking power is available even under wet conditions. And with the "priming" programme the system reduces the response time of the brakes.

The standard ATTENTION ASSIST can warn the driver and suggests taking a break, as soon as it detects signs of driver drowsiness. The system monitors the driver’s behaviour in particular by using a steering angle sensor on the steering column. If it deviates from the previously measured profile, visual and audible warnings are emitted.

The Brake Assist can provide protection against accidents by recognising emergency braking situations based on the speed with which the brake pedal is depressed and then automatically builds up full braking power. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) then meters the braking power up to the slip threshold, which is how steering control is maintained. Once the driver releases the brake pedal, the automatic brake boosting is immediately terminated.

The (optional) PARKTRONIC electronic parking aid monitors the front and rear of the vehicle when manoeuvring by means of sensors and warns the driver if there is a risk of collision. If the system identifies an obstacle, it provides a visual signal. Should the distance drop below approx. 35 cm, a short warning sound is emitted. If the vehicle approaches even closer (to less than approx. 25 cm) a continuous signal is heard. PARKTRONIC uses this procedure to make parking safe, even with limited space available.
Parking Guidance helps the driver, not only when parking, but also when looking for a parking space. Because the ultrasonic sensors measure the length of parking spaces parallel to the car automatically at vehicle speeds of 30 km/h or less. If a suitable space is found, Parking Guidance then provides precise directions regarding the correct steering angle as well as the turn-in and turn-back points. |  |

The tyre pressure monitoring system warns if the tyres have lost a dangerous amount of air, thus increasing handling safety. The wheel electronics of the four wheels continually transmit the tyre pressure and temperature data to the vehicle’s control unit. If the system identifies a variance then it warns the driver via a yellow or red signal in the instrument cluster.

PRE-SAFE® can recognise the risk of an accident early on and activate safety systems which can reduce the change of injury for vehicle occupants. To accomplish this PRE-SAFE® continually monitors the sensor data from the systems such as ESP® and BAS and identifies events such as noticeable understeering or oversteering and emergency stops.
If a critical driving situation is detected, the systems can respond within fractions of a second. The electronic belt tensioners are activated, the electrically-adjustable seats (only in conjunction with memory package) is moved to a more favourable position for the event of a collision and the side windows and the sliding/tilting sunroof (option) are automatically closed.

The crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraint system is designed to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. NECK-PRO is fully integrated in the front head restraints and supports the head earlier in the event of a rear-end collision. If the sensors register a crash, they release a pre-tensioned spring that pushes the head restraints forwards and upwards. After deployment, the head restraints can be pushed back to their original position by hand. The rear seat head restraints can be returned to their original positions from the front of the vehicle by pressing a button. |

The cruise control and SPEEDTRONIC functions enhance ride comfort and safety: simply press a button to set a travel speed which is then automatically adhered to. With SPEEDTRONIC it is possible to set a maximum speed, which for example can be useful when there are speed limits to observe.
