The integral ADAPTIVE BRAKE system improves ride comfort and safety by helping to execute critical braking manoeuvres with the ABS anti-lock braking system and making difficult driving situations easier with convenience functions.

These include the HOLD function which acts like a parking brake and can be activated by briefly depressing the brake pedal (and is released again either by briefly depressing the accelerator pedal or by depressing the brake pedal briefly once again). The HOLD function then keeps the vehicle from rolling unintentionally when stopped at a light or in stop-and-go traffic. The hill-start assist prevents the vehicle from rolling back, or forwards unexpectedly, e.g. when pulling away on a slope and changing from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The "brake drying" function ensures that full braking power is available even under wet conditions. And with the "priming" programme the system reduces the response time of the brakes.

The Brake Assist can provide protection against accidents by recognising emergency braking situations based on the speed with which the brake pedal is depressed and then automatically builds up full braking power. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) then meters the braking power up to the slip threshold, which is how steering control is maintained. Once the driver releases the brake pedal, the automatic brake boosting is immediately terminated.

The (optional) PARKTRONIC electronic parking aid monitors the front and rear of the vehicle when manoeuvring by means of sensors and warns the driver if there is a risk of collision. If the system identifies an obstacle, it provides a visual signal. Should the distance drop below approx. 35 cm, a short warning sound is emitted. If the vehicle approaches even closer (to less than approx. 25 cm) a continuous signal is heard. PARKTRONIC uses this procedure to make parking safe, even with limited space available.

Parking Guidance helps the driver, not only when parking, but also when looking for a parking space. Because the ultrasonic sensors measure the length of parking spaces parallel to the car automatically at vehicle speeds of 30 km/h or less. If a suitable space is found, Parking Guidance then provides precise directions regarding the correct steering angle as well as the turn-in and turn-back points. 

The tyre pressure monitoring system warns if the tyres have lost a dangerous amount of air, thus increasing handling safety. The wheel electronics of the four wheels continually transmit the tyre pressure and temperature data to the vehicle’s control unit. If the system identifies a variance then it warns the driver via a yellow or red signal in the instrument cluster.

The crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraint system is designed to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. NECK-PRO is fully integrated in the front head restraints and supports the head earlier in the event of a rear-end collision. If the sensors register a crash, they release a pre-tensioned spring that pushes the head restraints forwards and upwards. After deployment, the head restraints can be pushed back to their original position by hand. The rear seat head restraints can be returned to their original positions from the front of the vehicle by pressing a button. 

The cruise control and SPEEDTRONIC functions enhance ride comfort and safety: simply press a button to set a travel speed which is then automatically adhered to. With SPEEDTRONIC it is possible to set a maximum speed, which for example can be useful when there are speed limits to observe.

The media interface is a universal interface in the glove compartment which you can use with various mobile audio and video devices while you're on the road. So for example you can comfortably access a USB stick or your iPod® using the vehicle's control and display units. 

The Light Package (optionally available) comprises bi-xenon headlamps with variable light distribution for country roads, motorways and for thick fog conditions, as well as automatic headlamp range adjustment. With the additional functions of the adaptive main beam assist feature, the system automatically adjusts the headlamps in a soft transition towards the low-beam setting in the event of oncoming traffic or vehicles travelling ahead. If the road ahead is free, on the other hand, the greatest possible range is made use of - and can be extended from 65 to a maximum of 300 metres. It is no longer necessary to switch back and forth between high and low beam manually. The active light function and the cornering light feature in the foglamps are further components of the package. To make yourself seen - an essential safety aspect. The daytime driving lights and the LED-technology turn indicator lamps draw sufficient attention from other road users, and the integrated headlamp cleaning system reduces to a minimum the soiling of the vehicle’s lighting system.

The panoramic sliding sunroof provides a bright, welcoming interior atmosphere and a generous view of the sky. Its surface is almost a third larger and its transparent surface is almost twice as large compared to conventional sliding sunroofs. In addition the roller sunblinds block out any unwanted sunlight.

The memory package makes constant switching between drivers much more convenient. It stores the individual settings for the driver's seat for up to three people. As soon as a driver selects a setting with the touch of a button, electric controls automatically set the seat, steering column and exterior mirrors back to the previously saved positions.

Multi-zone luxury automatic climate control THERMOTRONIC (standard for V8 models) provides individual temperatures and a pleasant vehicle interior climate for driver, front passenger and vehicle rear. The system enables air to be directed in a targeted manner to the front seats, and via air vents in the B-pillars, to the vehicle rear, complemented by a compact booster located beneath the centre console. Rear-compartment passengers have a separate control panel at their disposal.

In order to ensure an optimum climate at all times, sensors constantly monitor sunlight intensity and the humidity of the air drawn in. In addition, a combination or active charcoal filter stops dust and pollutants. Apart from this, automatic mode can be adjusted to individual wishes with the three climate modes DIFFUSE, MEDIUM and FOCUS. 

The electrically-operated rear window blind and the optimised double sun visors protect the passengers from direct sunlight and reduce the temperature in the vehicle interior. They can be conveniently operated both from the driver’s seat and from the front-passenger seat. The sun protection blinds in the rear doors also preserve the privacy of the vehicle. Thanks to the perforations in the blind material, there is practically no reduction of visibility from inside the vehicle.
